While there were many great bands in the early 2000s, as there have always been and still are today, something had yet to be done. I needed a vessel to channel furor teutonicus. Something brimming with the conviction, ferocity, and militaristic traits heard in various genres and bands, but primarily from within. Thus Martial Barrage was realized in 2004. Recruiting from Winnipeg’s active metal scene, we began to rehearse material which I had been writing over the past few years and recorded the 5-song ‘Hail the Valkelion’ demo CDR that year.
These demos were distributed, traded, and sold across the world via the mail as was customary in underground metal at the time. The band continued to work on new material I had written after the demo’s release. A small Canadian label called Sinister Sounds signed Martial Barrage to release a full-length album the following year. This label had been founded by someone known to the band members from central Canada’s metal community, but then as now, I wanted the band to stand on the strength of its output. As such, the now long defunct Sinister Sounds was unaware of who was even in the band. “Call of the Serapeum” came out in 2005, containing 8 new eruptions of heinous violence and power. This CD also made the rounds of the world’s metal underground and has long been out of print.
The sound captured on our recordings was always a reflection of the budgets Martial Barrage had to work with, which was minimal at best. Now these two obscure releases are available once again, remastered from the even more raw originals with improved artwork and layout, together in the creation before you.
